The Hobbit An Unexpected Journey is a 2012 epic fantasy film directed by Peter Jackson. It is the first of a three-part film adaptation of the novel The Hobbit (1937) by J. R. R. Tolkien, to be followed by The Desolation of Smaug and There and Back Again, due for theatrical release in 2013 and 2014, respectively.Set sixty years before The Lord of the Rings, the story is about the hobbit Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman), hired by the wizard Gandalf (Ian McKellen) to accompany 13 dwarves led by Thorin Oakenshield (Richard Armitage) on a quest across Middle-earth to reclaim the Lonely Mountain from Smaug the dragon. The film premiered in New Zealand on 28 November 2012 and is scheduled for general release on 14 December 2012 at over 4,000 theaters.The film is written by Peter Jackson, his longtime collaborators Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens, and Guillermo del Toro, who originally was chosen to direct the film.

Storyline: This prequel to The Lord of the Rings trilogy follows Bilbo Baggins, an upstanding member of the "little people,” on the hazardous journey with Gandalf the Grey. Together with 13 fortune-seeking dwarves, Bilbo Baggins will be swept out his door and into a dangerous but grand adventure through the Lonely Mountains, where he must contend against all manner of enemies, from dragons, to giant spiders, hostile elves, ravenous wolves, and – perhaps the most perilous of all – a subterranean creature named Gollum from whom Bilbo wins a magical ring (the ring that rules them all) in a riddling contest.
